Another Voice: Naval Park needs donors to help preserve history

For over three decades, the Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park sat as downtown’s lone waterfront attraction. Now Buffalo’s waterfront is the place to be, year-round.

Buffalo boasts the world’s largest inland naval park. In addition to our three major ships, there are 13 memorials, tanks, planes and helicopters, and our Wall of Honor. Our museum contains exhibits from World War II, the Civil War, the War of 1812 – and soon, World War I – all honoring our veterans’ sacrifices.

Since opening in 1979, the park has hosted over 1,000 reunions, corporate/private parties, veterans’ honor ceremonies and U.S. citizenship ceremonies. Over 75,000 Scouts/Sea Cadets have slept aboard our ships, and our Memorial Walk of Heroes and Promenade attracts over a million annual visitors.

Judge Robert Russell Lecture

August 29, 2016/in News/by admin

Many people visited the Buffalo Naval Park on July 22nd to see the honorable Judge Robert Russell’s lecture about the issues that face many veterans, specifically female veterans. Judge Russell created the nation’s first Veterans Treatment Court who’s mission is to successfully habilitate veterans by diverting them from the traditional criminal justice system and providing them with the tools they need in order to lead a productive and law-abiding lifestyle.

Judge Russell’s presentation entitled “Buffalo’s Veterans Treatment Court & The Women Who Appear Before It” covered many topics including Veteran criminal activity, drug use, mental illness, homelessness and more.

August 11, 2016/in News/by admin

The 2016 party in the Park was a great success! 400+ guests enjoyed food provided by Liberty Hound restaurant, desserts by Eat Dessert First, beverages by Try It Distributing and musical entreatment by the Theresa Quinn group. The Party included table promotions set up for USS Little Rock Commissioning, along with video of the new ship, Naval Park, & Erie County’s Thank a Vet Program.

We expanded this time including the Hangar Bldg. (for desserts and the auctions), the USS Little Rock’e fantail , music on the USS The Sullivans, and for the first time we included our neighbor’s – the Liberty Hound restaurant – patio, which added air-conditioned seating and another bar! The Greater Buffalo Fire Fighters Pipes & Drums lead the Navy Color Guard & performed as well as the National Anthem was sung by an 11 yr. old boy, who did a great job!

WNY Veterans Honored on Independence Day at Naval and Military Park in Buffalo

July 4, 2016/in News/by admin

BUFFALO, N.Y. — As the nation celebrates its 240th year of independence, four more veterans were inducted on the Wall of Honor inside the Naval and Military Park at Canalside in Buffalo.

Brian Fitzgerald, Vito Rinaldo, Elmer Wienclawski and John Moffat were honored for their service with a name plaque on the wall with other Western New York veterans. Dozens came out to the ceremony that included a keynote address from State Senator Tim Kennedy.

“Two hundred and forty years is an extraordinary feat. It’s a feat that has only been able to have been accomplished by those individuals that put on the military uniform like the four inductees here today, others in this room and many that aren’t here with us, that have fought both at home and abroad, to protect those freedoms that were signed 240 years ago,” Kennedy said.
