SAVE U.S.S. THE SULLIVANS
The Buffalo & Erie County Naval & Military Park’s destroyer U.S.S. THE SULLIVANS has developed several leaks and is in need of repair. The park is looking for help with paying for the repairs so we can keep this spectacular piece of history in our Buffalo community for many years to come.
Kelly Sullivan, granddaughter of Albert Sullivan, visited the Buffalo Naval Park this year to help us launch a Capital Campaign to preserve her family’s ship. Kelly stated,
“We are here at the Buffalo Naval Park today to discuss a very important veteran that needs our help. She served in World War II and Korea with honor and distinction, earning herself 11 battle stars. She took care of thousands of sailors, not losing a single one in battle. She is the USS The Sullivans, and she is my family’s legacy. My grandfather was Albert Sullivan, one of the five “Fighting Sullivan” brothers. In 1943, three months after the loss of her five sons, my great-grandmother Aletta Sullivan christened this magnificent ship moored right outside these walls. And in 1995, I christened the active duty USS The Sullivans (DDG 68). But unlike DDG 68, DD 537 only has a small crew to care for her. She was not designed to last this long, and now she is showing her age. Unfortunately, time has not been kind to her, and her hull is in dire need of repair. We must fight for her, the way she fought for us. That is why I am here in Buffalo, NY at the Naval Park to enlist your help. As my grandfather and his brothers used to say, “We Stick Together!” Shipmates, let us all “Stick Together” to raise the $2 million needed to Save the Sullivans. Please, help us to preserve her rightful spot on the Buffalo Waterfront. For donations, go to our website and click the Save the USS The Sullivans.”
We have set up a donation link through our PayPal, any amount donated is greatly appreciated.
