Vietnam War Living Historians will be present with table displays designed to educate attendees on the uniforms\, equipment and stories of the era.This event is free to the public and is a great opportunity to learn about the Vietnam War and to help support the Naval Park. Planned activities include table displays of military equipment and weapons\, military vehicles\, educational films and opportunities for Vietnam Veterans to speak.The Black Lions is a Living History group in the Western New York area that educates the public on the Vietnam War. The group concentrates on an impression of the 1st U.S. Infantry Division\, 2nd Battalion\, 28th Regiment “Black Lions” B Company Rifle Squad in Vietnam during 1967-1969. The group utilizes hands-on displays of the uniforms\, equipment\, weapons and every day items carried and used by the “Big Red One” Infantry of the Vietnam War.

DESCRIPTION:Monday\, September 11\, 2023 will mark the largest day of volunteerism in the history of the Buffalo Naval & Military Park. Around 130 National Grid employees will partake in day-long activities to kick off the 9/11 Day of Service\, including welding\, removing rust\, running electrical wire\, and painting the historic vessels. \nThey’ll be joined by staff from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York and Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus\, bringing the total number of volunteers to around 150. We are so grateful for their support and look forward to seeing all of the work they accomplish at the Naval Park. \nThe Buffalo Naval Park will host a 9/11 ceremony in the Hangar Building at 11:30 AM that is free and open to the public. The ships and submarine will be closed on September 11\, but the gift shop will remain open from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM.  \n

Visit spaces on board the USS Little Rock that are not available on any of our other tours. \nEach tour will last approximately 2 hours and will be limited to 11 people. When touring most areas of the ship\, visitors should expect to traverse narrow passageways\, be able to step over significantly raised thresholds\, and climb up and down very steep ladders. We recommend that you wear comfortable clothes\, closed-toe shoes\, and bring a flashlight. Wear your costume and “Ship-or-Treat” aboard USS The Sullivans\, USS Little Rock\, and USS Croaker to participate in family activities and collect Halloween goodies. Admission to the Naval Park is included in the ticket price. This event is designed for children ages 15 and under. \nThe Naval Park will be open from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM\, with last admission at 3:00 PM. The Ship or Treat activities will be available between 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM. \nPlease purchase a Ship or Treat ticket only for those who wish to participate in the activities and Halloween goodies. All other guests can purchase a general admission ticket. All children ages 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult. \nWhen touring most areas of the ships\, visitors should expect to traverse narrow passageways\, be able to step over significantly raised thresholds\, and climb up and down very steep ladders. If you choose to wear a costume\, please ensure that it is family friendly and fits properly to help prevent trips and falls. SUMMARY:Speaker Series: The Naval Battle of Guadalcanal
DESCRIPTION:The Naval Battle of Guadalcanal\, which took place from November 12-15\, 1942\, was the decisive engagement in a series of naval battles between Allied (primarily American) and Imperial Japanese forces during World War II. \nOn November 13\, 1942\, a violent explosion engulfed USS Juneau (CL-52) and the ship seemed to vanish from sight. Catastrophically hit by torpedoes from Japanese submarine I-26\, the ship sank in less than a minute with most of its 693 crewmen onboard. About 115 Sailors survived the sinking\, but only 10 were rescued after days at sea. The story of service and sacrifice of USS Juneau\, particularly the loss of the five Sullivan brothers\, had a powerful impact on the U.S. Navy and the nation as a whole\, then and today. \nJoin us at 6:00 PM on Monday\, November 13\, 2023 for a speaker series program presented by our Director of Education\, Steven Tedesco\, to learn more about the Naval Battle that was a pivotal moment in World War II history. \nThe program will begin at 6:00 PM in the Buffalo Naval Park’s Museum Building on the Second Floor.
